If you’re struggling to grow on Threads, it’s not because the platform doesn’t work.

Hey Reader,

The biggest mistake small business owners make on Threads is assuming it works like other platforms.

Mistake #1: Treating Threads Like Twitter or Instagram

They treat it like a Twitter clone, and fire off random thoughts.

Or like Instagram, where they post polished content and expect engagement.

Or even LinkedIn where they try to seem overly professional to make themselves look better.

Why This Doesn't Work:

  • Threads prioritizes conversations, not just content. Unlike Twitter, where news and hot takes dominate, Threads thrives on genuine engagement.
  • Traditional social media rules don’t apply. Posting and walking away won’t get you far. If you’re not engaging in conversations, your posts get buried.

The Fix:

Start treating Threads as a community-first platform where engagement leads to visibility. Instead of just posting, join discussions, ask questions, and create connections with others.

Mistake #2: Posting Without a Clear Hook or Conversation Starter

Most people fail to grow on Threads because their posts lack a compelling reason for others to engage.

They post self-promotions, random thoughts, or overly polished content that doesn’t invite conversations.

Why This Doesn't Work:

  • Threads is built for conversations. If your post doesn’t naturally encourage replies, it’s unlikely to gain traction.
  • People scroll fast. If your opening line isn’t interesting, they won’t stop to read more.

The Fix:

  • Every post should invite conversation. Use open-ended questions, bold statements, or controversial takes that make people want to respond.
  • Start with a hook. The first line of your post determines whether people engage or keep scrolling.
  • Avoid empty self-promotion. Instead of saying, “Check out my new product,” try, “What’s the biggest struggle you face when [problem your product solves]?”

Mistake #4: Inconsistent Posting & Engagement

Many small business owners struggle with consistency.

They’ll post 10 times in one day, then disappear for a week.

Others just lurk without contributing.

Why This Doesn't Work:

  • Inconsistent activity kills momentum. The algorithm favors those who post and engage regularly.
  • Your audience forgets you. If you vanish for long periods, people stop engaging with your content.

The Fix:

  • Find a sustainable posting rhythm. Instead of posting sporadically, aim for consistent daily engagement. Even 1-2 quality posts a day is better than bursts of activity followed by silence.
  • Balance content and interaction. Don’t just post. Focus on replying to comments and join conversations.

It's never too late to turn things around.
